Assimilation vs. Heritage

10) In the play Bennie is dating two completely opposite men. George Murchison, who is from a wealthy and well-educated family. Although he has some good qualities he has a snobby attitude, which Bennie doesn't like at all. On the other hand, she dates Joseph Asagai, who is from Nigeria and believes in natural things. He believes that African-Americans should be knowledgable and proud of their real home of Africa. In a way, Lorraine Hansberry portrays the character George as a representation of assimilation/conformity for African-Americans. Joseph respresents the complete opposite, which is Bennie's heritage and her African pride. How does Bennie choose between these two beliefs? How do you know which one she prefers? Explain.

It may not be so bad!

9) Soon after Walter lost the money, Joe came to the apartment to see Bennie. What does Joe think of the family losing the insurance money? How did he come to his conclusion? Explain.

Religion

8) Lena slapped Bennie when Bennie questioned her about God's existance. How does Lena's belief in God relate to her ability to keep her family fully functioning?

Missing Money

7) Bobo(Walter's friend), goes over to the Younger home to tell Walter about the business transaction with Willy. Bobo, Willy, and Walter put money together so they could get a liquor license faster, but Bobo found out that Willy stole all the money when they were supposed to meet and Willy never showed up. As a result Walter lost all of his mother's money from the insurance check, which was about $6,500. What is the irony in Walter's "friend" stealing his money? How does this relate to Walter's life?

African Culture

6) Joseph Asagai brings the African culture into the Younger family's home through his relationship with Bennie. As she discovers her African heritage, she falls in love with African culture, attire, and customs. Joseph teaches Bennie a lot about culture in Nigeria (his homeland). What is it that Bennie gets so interested in this new culture? How do you know that she is interested? Use examples from the play.

Quiet Ruth

5) While Walter,Bennie, and Lena speak up about their dreams and what they want, Ruth never says what she wants. Explain why Ruth doesn't speak up about her dreams and feelings while being surrounded by Walter and Benny who always speaking their minds.

Permethus

4) One night George goes over to the Younger home to pick up Beneatha(Bennie). When he is their he gets into an arguement with Walter, Beneatha's brother about biterness. While George is leaving he says, "Good night, Permethus!" (Hansberry p.86)referring to Walter. Who is Permethus and why would George use Permethus in this allegory?
